The field

Everything is moving toward you or away from you. That's the whole of it — not fate, not forecast, just where the moment currently stands. The Codex holds that field in full: eight tensions, each side already turned one way or the other, waiting to be seen.

You don't need to draw to look. Flip through the whole of it any time, in the app — every axis, every condition, both directions it can face.

The Codex's overview in Vesper Tesserae, listing all eight axes: Threshold/Continuance, Dissolution/Crystallization, Witness/Participant, Descent/Emergence, Concealment/Exposure, Contraction/Expansion, and Severance/Binding

Threshold / Continuance

moments of crossing · the long middle

The charged instant of crossing over, against the sustained, unremarkable duration of what continues.

Firstlight

Threshold, Arriving

"The darkness has not lifted so much as thinned. Something that was not possible yesterday is possible now, though it has no name yet."

Dissolution / Crystallization

coming apart · taking form

Whether something is losing its shape or finding one — whether the world is resolving or releasing.

The Forge

Crystallization, Arriving

"The heat is applied to make possible what ordinary temperature cannot do. The material is not destroyed by the forge — it is rendered capable of being otherwise."

Witness / Participant

watching life · being inside it

The distance or proximity between a self and the life it inhabits — the choice or accident of inside versus outside.

The Fray

Participant, Arriving

"In the middle of it, the noise of it, the contact and collision of it. There is no observer position from here — every direction is involvement."

Descent / Emergence

going under · coming through

The movement into the below, and the slow or sudden return to surface and air.

The Surfacing

Emergence, Arriving

"Movement toward the membrane of light above, the long ascent nearly complete. What was submerged is becoming what surfaces."

Concealment / Exposure

what is hidden · what is revealed

The degree to which something is available to be known — the difference between the private and the exposed.

The Spotlight

Exposure, Arriving

"The beam has found its subject and all else has gone dark. What is illuminated is illuminated absolutely."

Contraction / Expansion

drawing inward · opening outward

The movement between the concentrated interior and the diffused exterior — the breath that pulls in and the breath that releases.

The Canopy

Expansion, Arriving

"The spread has extended overhead, wide and covering, a ceiling made of growth. The canopy is generosity made structural."

Severance / Binding

what separates · what connects

The forces that pull things apart or hold them together — the making and unmaking of attachment.

Confluence

Binding, Arriving

"Two currents finding each other at the place where they combine. The confluence is the beginning of a different river."

Stillness / Current

the quiet center · the moving force

The difference between the center that does not move and the force that moves everything.

The Eye

Stillness, Arriving

"The absolute center of the turning, the motionless point around which everything revolves. What is here is still because everything turns around it."
